The power of the 1 hour walk

We were created to move

Sometimes, our mental health is no longer supported by the same people, routines or practices we choose every day.

In those “sometimes” we find either blockages or renewal.

And it’s really up to us to at least give ourselves the chance to move forward, even without knowing what’s next.

Life is either moving us backward or forward, there is never a standstill.

I remember what one of my dearest teachers, the famous planner behind “1984” Apple ad told me on the second day of a class I took back in 2016: today you are going to sit on a different chair. A forced change of perspective always brings more insights. And so it did. And with that small insight in mind I tried to live my life in constant change and flux, understanding that we will never repeat today.

Exactly a week ago I attended a workshop of family constellations. I didn’t actually connect with the instructor even if I am extremely passionate about this healing modality, nor with the exercises throughout the day. I was merely an observer of the phenomenon. But something in that experience opened up an old wound. And for the next 2-3 days I cried non stop wishing I went back to a past relationship that caused heartbreak and body illness during the past years. As emotions were becoming stronger and stronger, control over my mental reality was dimmed. I felt all the triggers coming back to me just to show the wound was still there, screaming for release and healing. So I listened. I said to myself: this is an extremely complicated and exhausting process so I will attack it with the simplest thing I can do now.

So I put on my street clothes and sneakers, took the headphones and just walked for 1 hour straight, no stop.

My mind calmed down with each step I consciously took on the pavement. I began breathing more from my lungs and belly and moved the hormones and lymph through my body to release the pent-up emotions from both the event and the days after. Next, my day was calmer, more focused on productive work and decisions were easier to take.

Research has shown that walking on a daily basis can help lessen symptoms associated with chronic mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Walking is free and you can walk everywhere without any additional equipment. You'll notice that the more you do it, the more good benefits you'll experience.

Today I’m on my 6th 1 hour walk day. And I feel peaceful, like a lot of my brain fog really turned into sharp connections. I don’t think this is going to change my life forever, but I do know that this week looked and felt differently because of this choice I made. A simple one.
